Divan beds are great.
The practical storage underneath makes them ideal for tidying away bed linen, towels, shoes or anything else. Way better than putting all your stuff under the bed on the floor and letting it slowly become one with the dust!
In this guide, I’m going to talk you through a bit about the different types of divans before getting down to telling you which ones are best!
(1). What is a divan bed?
A divan bed consists of a divan base and matching mattress. The base acts as a platform for the mattress and traditionally contains drawers for storage. They often have wheels, making divans one of the easiest beds to move around your bedroom. If you already have a mattress, you can buy a divan base by itself – often the cheapest type of bed available.
(2) Types of Divan bed
Divan beds and bases usually have the option to come with drawers or an ottoman storage facility or Non storage.
- Divan beds with drawers
Divan beds with drawers offer 2 drawers or 4 drawers. A double divan with four drawers will either have 4 equal sized drawers, or two sets of different sizes. If you opt for a single divan bed but want drawers, you’ll only be access to the drawers from one side.
- Ottoman bed base
An ottoman bed base lifts up from the bottom, giving you the entire space beneath your mattress to use as storage. Instead of tucking your bits and bobs underneath your bed, you can store extra bedding, cushions or magazines neatly away.
- Divan bed base
A divan bed base is ideal if you’re short on space or are prone to mess. You can easily tuck anything lying around into the drawers and out of sight. Not only this, but the upholstered base adds a stylish addition to your bedroom and offers you a cosy night’s sleep.
- Non storage Divan bed
Finally, you have divans without any storage, this helps to add additional comfort or support but aren’t what I’m going to be focussing on in this guide.

The number one benefit of a divan bed is the extra storage that comes with it. Particularly good for those with smaller bedrooms, divan sets offer a completely hollow underneath area that is designed specifically for your storage use.
- Neat appearance
Unlike many other beds, when you store your belongings under a divan set, you don’t run the risk of making your bedroom look cluttered. Divan beds are specially designed to store your items out of sight, ensuring that your bedroom remains the clean and tranquil space it should be.
- Save bedroom space
Many bed frames are designed to be wider and longer than the size of your mattress, purely as a design feature. However, whilst this may add to their appearance, for those with smaller bedrooms those few centimetres make all the difference. Divan beds are designed to be compact, therefore your mattress simply sits on top of the divan with no overhang or excess frame taking up any unnecessary space.

A great bonus that comes with a divan set is their flexible style. Generally, divan sets don’t come with a headboard, therefore allowing you to add your own personal touch.
(4). Does a divan bed come with a mattress?
If you don’t need a mattress, simply choose a divan bed base. If you choose a divan bed, it will come with a mattress.
And don’t think your choice is limited, if you’d prefer you can buy the base and mattress separately. For example, you can opt for a divan bed with the following mattresses:

(5). Divan beds UK size guide
When choosing a new divan bed in addition to choosing the right style to complement your bedroom whether the divan bed will fit is also an important consideration.
UK sizes are small single divan bed, single divan bed, small double divan bed, double divan bed, kingsize divan bed and super king size divan bed.
- Small single divan bed (not listed at moment, all divan beds are available in single size, simply state at checkout that you would prefer a 2ft 6″ single). The small single is ideal for smaller rooms or as a starter bed
- Standard single divan bed: 3ft x 6ft3″. The standard single bed for either adults or children
- Small double divan bed: 4ft x 6ft3″. The small double bed is ideal for smaller bedrooms when a single is too small for you yet a double bed is too big for the room.
- Standard double divan bed: 4ft 6″ x 190cms. The double divan bed is okay for 2 people to share, a kingsize or super kingsize will provide you with more sleeping space if you have the room to accommodate this
- Kingsize divan bed: 5ft x 6ft6″. The kingsize divan bed is perfect for two people if you want a little extra room. The kingsize bed is longer than the double therefore perfect for the taller adult.
- Super king size divan bed: 6ft x 6ft6″. The super kingsize divan bed is the ideal solution if you prefer the maximum room in bed. Also perfect for parents with children who jump into their bed on a Sunday morning.
